about

I got a little obsessed with Virginia Woolf’s diaries and how they recorded her mind taking flight, exploring dark and unknown spaces in her psych. She always returned to the ground at the end of her writing session and seemed disappointed by the fact that she had to come back to the real world. The song is about her husband finding the diaries and feeling helpless to the power of her mind. He knew she would go on one of these journeys she so often did when writing and not come back. He mourns her inevitable departure.

lyrics

Mourning
I'm tired of mourning
I want the moon to come out
and teach us how to play again

Falling
Have we finished falling
Oh the ground beneath
our souls feels pretty dense

It's the flight of your mind that scares me
From common sense
One day you'll fly away and I can't help but think
What could I have done different?
Your sadness has the stomach of a giant

Mourning
I don't want to mourn this
But something has come to an end
and I can't put my finger on it

Hold me
That's what you told me
And I can hear your words
but I can't find your body
in this mess we've made

It's the flight of your mind that scares me
From common sense
One day you'll fly away and I can't help but think
What could I have done different?
Your sadness has the stomach of a giant
What could I have done to stop this
Your sadness was way too strong for us

Mourning
Do I have to mourn us?
Or will you be there when I wake up tomorrow morning
